Dinbych and Rhuthun fought out a competitive derby on a fine afternoon at Dinbych with Rhuthun winning with a bonus point though they had to defend well for spells against a lively Dinbych attack. First points were on the board after 7 minutes play when scrum half Cai Edwards nipped over the try line after some good forwards play. Although Rhuthun were playing with some urgency Dinbych’s defence thwarted any scoring chances and 20 minutes in after a period of pressure Dinbych were awarded a penalty which full back Gruff Roberts slotted over reducing the arrears to two points. Almost immediately Rhuthun hit back with a well worked try by fly half Iestyn Davies which full back Nathan Jones converted. The rest of the half oscillated between the two 22s with defences in the ascendancy and there was no further score with Rhuthun ahead 12-3 at half time. The Blues widened the gap straight after the restart with 2nd row Cameron Lumsden forcing himself over the line and Nathan converting. The Blues now had their tails up and after another 5 minutes the ball was fed across the field to replacement Emyr Gwynedd for the bonus point try converted by Nathan. Rhuthun kept the pressure up and within another 5 minutes Nathan ran from around DInbych’s 10 yard line and forced himself through the home side’s defence to score Rhuthun’s 5th try which he converted. With the score 31-3 to Rhuthun and 25 minutes of play left Dinbych tried hard to break down Rhuthun’s defence and although home side had much of the possession the Blues organised defence held and they always managed to clear their lines. The game progressed to full time with Dinbych still working away in Rhuthun’s 22 but to no avail and the whistle blew with the score still at 31-3. This was a good day for the Blues away from home with the 2nds playing their 1st game in Division 3 also at Dinbych and winning 45-3.
