Ruthin 24 v 10 Denbigh

Last weekend we celebrated the return of Saturday as a 'Rugby Day'.
 
It turns out Friday night isn't a bad alternative.
 
Credit to groundsman Steff Tudor who had the Cae Ddol track in pristine condition for a local derby that drew the largest home crowd for 18 months.
 
It was the visitors who set the early pace. Their  expansive and accurate approach play was rewarded as they opened their account with a penalty goal from Full Back, Gruff Roberts.
 
That margin was extended to 10 when Ruthin turned over possession at a midfield line out before centre Aidyn Jones carved through the blue defensive line, feeding his skipper, Tom Seddon who cantered under the sticks.

A growing sense of tension amongst the home crowd was eased when Tudur Parry barged over from short range. Vindicating the decision of Captain, Emyr Gwynedd to reject a simple shot for three.
 
As the break approached, the hosts eventually broke a resilient rear guard defensive effort from Denbigh.
 
A quick tap penalty from stand off, Iestyn Davies was shipped into the hands of 80 minute loose head, Danny Miller.
 
Fortune favours the brave and from that range physics favoured Miller.
 
Dyfan Humphreys was unsuccessful from the tee and it was 10 each as they gathered for the half time swig.
 
Having established score board parity, any designs Ruthin had on cutting open after the break had to be binned. The visitors' derby day appetite for tackling didn't diminish.
 
On a night that looked to be one for the fast and loose, it was execution of the tight and gnarly that eventually swung things in Ruthin's favour.
 
Second row, Chris Davies took a neat inside ball from half back, Phyl Roberts, to bash his way over giving his side the lead for the first time.

It was Davies' second row partner, Cameron Lumsden who gave the home team a bit of breathing space. His effort taking the home team's cumulative metres gained in the act of scoring to somewhere in the region of four.
 
Richards made it two from two and Denbigh needed to score next.
 
The accuracy that gave Denbigh their early lead dipped in correlation with their energy levels, as they chased a score to try and make it an uncomfortable finish for their rivals.
 
Ruthin will have been frustrated by their own inability to put the game out of sight when Josh Wilson failed to gather a try scoring pass after a break from number 8, Shay Owen.
 
Neither team was able to further trouble the scorers and it remained a 14 point margin in favour of Ruthin when the 80 had elapsed.
