Caernarfon 18 Rhuthun 25

After a 5 week break Rhuthun had to fight out a tough encounter at Caernarfon on Saturday.  Playing up hill but with a gusty wind behind them the Blues were first with points on the board with a penalty goal kick after 5 minutes from full back Nathan Jones.  The Coffis however took the lead 5 minutes later when after a short period of pressure wing Dylan Gwyn went over the whitewash.  Rhuthun missed the chance to regain the lead when a penalty goal kick went wide.  The game oscillated between the two 22s with both sides defending well and then after 30 minutes play the ball was passed out to wing Bryn Sheppard who put the Blues back in the lead with an unconverted try.  Straight after the restart Rhuthun were awarded a kickable penalty and Nathan obliged putting his team 11 – 5 ahead.  By now the gusty wind was accompanied by driving rain and the last 10 minutes of the first half were played out with no further score.  Straight after the break Caernarfon full back Aled Jones reduced the arrears with a penalty goal but then the gap widened again to 18-8 with a Blues try by 2nd row Sion Roberts converted by Nathan.  After a period of pressure in the home side’s 22 tempers frayed resulting in 2 yellow cards for Rhuthun and 1 for Caernarfon.  The Blues 13 men defended well for a while but eventually Aled Jones got over the visitors’ try line and converted and then a couple of minutes later slotted over a penalty goal putting the two sides at 18 points each.  The teams returned to 15 men apiece and after withstanding a Coffis attack the Blues returned to the home side’s 22 with some determination which was rewarded by a try from No 8 Tudur Parry converted by Nathan.  Another fracas broke out and the referee blew for full time with Rhuthun winning 25-18.
