Ruthin completed 4 wins out of 4 in their pre-season matches with a 12-7 win against Wrexham in a hard fought match at Cae Ddol on Saturday. The visitors started strongly and were aggressive in the scrum and Ruthin had to defend well in the first half and had little opportunity to get themselves into a scoring position. The visitors went ahead with a try from a lineout on the Blues 22 and at half time were 5-0 ahead. The second half was more evenly matched and the Blues evened the score after centres Emyr Gwynedd and Steffan Morgan combined to put Morgan over the whitewash. The try was not converted and the score remained at 5-5 well into the second half. The Blues were testing a robust Wrexham defence as they tried to gain ascendancy but it was not until a few minutes before the end of the match that wing Sion Roberts scored after some fine work by scrum half Phyl Roberts. Fly half Lewis Isaac converted. In the last seconds of the match Wrexham almost reduced the arrears when one of their backs just slipped into touch before he got over the line after a fine run down the touch line. There have been some good displays by players coming up from the youth team in all 4 pre-season matches and the team will be looking forward to meeting Nant Conwy at Cae Ddol next Saturday in the first league match of the season. 1sts and 2nds will be Kicking off at 1:30pm against Nant and the Youth team are also home to Denbigh so with Wales vs Italy on the big screen at the club at 5pm we should be in for a fine afternoon’s rugby.
