Rhuthun 3 Y Bala 7

Despite a slippery pitch from rain before and during the match Rhuthun and Bala put on an entertaining, if low scoring display, at Cae Ddol on Saturday.  After an initial 5 minutes of attacking play by the Blues which Bala defended well, the visitors worked their way up to the half way line with pick and run.  The ball was passed out to the wing and carried up field and after some nifty phase play Moi Dafydd went over the whitewash for a try which Owain Aled converted.  Bala tried to increase the lead but the Blues’ defence held and they returned to the attack and spent most of the rest of the first half in the visitors’ territory but could not get past a competent Bala defence. When the whistle blew at half time the score was still Bala 7 Rhuthun 0.  In the second half Rhuthun continued where they left off and 10 minutes in reduced the arrears by 3 points with a penalty goal from wing Nathan Jones.  Again Bala had to defend well and Rhuthun were unable to take advantage of their territory and possession.  An opportunity to reduce the arrears to 1 point was lost when a penalty goal kick went wide and towards the end of the game with tired legs from the heavy conditions errors on both sides began to creep in.  The Blues went down to 14 men with a yellow card and shortly afterwards the visitors also lost a man with a red card.  Bala launched a late attack but in a game dominated by defence it also came to no avail and the 80 minutes arrived with Bala winning 7-3.  Rhuthun got a much needed bonus point and, although disappointed that after a good performance they did not get the win, will go to Caernarfon next week in confident mood.
