Caernarfon 19 Rhuthun 40

Both sides got off to a nervous start in this Division 1 North game. Both had the opportunity to get points on the board with missed penalty kicks when a mix-up on the Ruthin try line after Caernarfon’s  kick led to a  scrum from which the ball was passed out to wing Dylan Gwyn who put the Coffis 5-0 up with a try.  Within 2 minutes Ruthin responded with a try from wing Harri Morgan converted by fly half Nathan Jones and then prop Dan Owen went over for a try also converted by Nathan.  One of the home side players was sin-binned and the Blues took advantage of the extra man to score two more tries in quick succession with hooker Danny Miller and No 8 Arwyn Davies doing the honours and Nathan converting.  Although Ruthin kept up the pressure there was no further score before half time.  At 28-5 up at the break and with winger Josh Wilson scoring another converted try immediately after the break it looked as though Ruthin would have an easy second half but a sending off of a Ruthin player 5 minutes into the half changed all that.  Playing against 14 men for the rest of the half the home side were more confident and flanker Dafydd Hughes capitalised on a period of pressure to score with full back Aled Jones converting.  The Blues were still looking dangerous in the Coffis half and in the 65th minute after some good play Harri Morgan got his second try and his team’s 6th, increasing the lead to 40 points to 12. The home side continued to try and reduce the arrears and 5 minutes from full time centre Iolo Hughes broke from a Coffi lineout 5 yds from Ruthin’s try line and scored with replacement Dominic Iau converting.  Caernarfon battled on into stoppage time in an attempt to get a try bonus point but the Blues defence held and the final whistle blew with Ruthin winning 40-19
