Ruthin U16's Win over the border

For the second successive Sunday Ruthin U16’s headed over the border to take on English opposition – this week it was Wirral RFC.

On the back of a great win last week the Blues arrived at the Wirral club confident and looking forward to playing some running rugby in the glorious sunshine.

Wirral had other ideas and pressured the Blues from the outset causing errors and forcing the lively Ruthin pack onto the back foot for long periods – the Ruthin lineout and scrum were both misfiring denying any quality possession for the Blues backline.

In an error strewn first half the highlight was a searing break from the Blues centre Jac Jones who covered 40 meters to go in under the post – he converted his own try.

Half time score: - Wirral 0 Ruthin 7

Wirral started the second half with great determination and had the Blues on the rack for the first 10 minutes and their efforts were rewarded by a try in the corner – conversion missed.

The score sparked the Blues into life and they played with far more control and aggression, they started to become dominant in the set piece and at the tackle area resulting in some quality ball that after several phases saw the other Ruthin centre Jack Jones smash over for a try which was converted by Jac Jones from wide out.

Injuries to Cai Hilditch-Roberts(head) and Jacob Quick (shoulder) took some shape out of the Ruthin performance but In the remaining few minutes of the game the Ruthin team showed some of the quality, aggression and control they that they normally play with and closed the game out to seal the victory.

Final score:-  Wirral 5 v Ruthin 14
