Clwyd Cup Final Ruthin 22 Mold 20

Ruthin 2nd team won the Clwyd Cup for the 8th successive year on Saturday but in an exciting game against Mold at Colwyn Bay the result was not decided until the last minute. The Blues got off to a strong start in the first ten minutes with a try by flanker Ben Taylor converted by Nathan Jones. Playing open rugby with ascendancy in the pack 2nd row Oliver Powell-Jones went over for a second shortly afterwards with Jones again converting. Mold responded and were awarded a penalty on Ruthin’s 22 which winger Jack Martin kicked for goal. The Blues returned to the attack and after some good phase play full back Mike Evans went over in the corner for Ruthin’s 3rd try. With the score 19-3 to Ruthin at half time it looked as though the Blues would win comfortably but Mold were having none of it. Virtually straight after the break they were over the Blues whitewash for an unconverted try. With some of Ruthin’s kicks going astray and the pack having lost its ascendancy the Blues were under pressure and Mold with tails up were playing some good flowing rugby. Mold got two more tries, one of which was converted, putting them 20-19 ahead with a few minutes to go. The Blues steadied and began to put some better play together and were themselves awarded a penalty in Mold’s half. Jones calmly stepped up to the mark and put the ball over the bar and Ruthin were back in the lead 22-20. With seconds to go Mold attempted a drop goal which went wide and the whistle blew with Ruthin again keeping the cup, but only just! Mold’s try scorers were Chris Ellis, Steve Holmes and Rich Cochran.
