Bala 20 Rhuthun 17

Bala got off to a good start at Maes Y Gwyniad with a converted try from Rhydian Jones in the first five minutes.  The Blues responded after some pressure with fly half Mike Evans running through the Bala defence for a try with wing Sion Roberts converting.  Both sides were playing open rugby and after some pressure the Blues missed an opportunity to go ahead with a penalty goal attempt. From the restart Bala worked their way into Ruthin’s half and the ball was kicked over the visitor’s defence and Dan Roberts picked up and scored a try which Rhydian Jones converted.  Bala went further ahead with a penalty goal from Jones.  The remaining 20 minutes of the first half were dominated by defences and there was no further score with Bala 17-7 ahead at half time.  Despite the 10 point gap the Blues were still in the game and after a great run by captain Kyle Davies he passed to No 8 Ben Taylor who jigged over for a try. The home side responded immediately with a penalty goal.  With the score at 20-12 to Bala and about 20 minutes to go the Blues upped the pressure.  The gap was narrowed further with a try by flanker Tom Crawford after Bala lost the ball from their own scrum 5 yards from the line.  Ruthin continued to pressure but could not break through the Bala defence.  Bala also forayed into Ruthin’s half but with no score and the game played out with Blues still trying to get those elusive points. The whistle blew on an entertaining match with the score 20-17 to Bala and a loser’s bonus point for Ruthin.
