Ruthin 2nds 41 Flint 17

A lot has changed in the world since Ruthin 2nds last played over 18 months ago, thankfully though not their ability to win rugby matches.

On a drizzly afternoon at Cae Ddol, both teams were lucky to be able to call on full benches. Pedr Jones' men gave senior debuts to a number of 18 year olds, who’s time in youth team had sadly evaporated under Covid lockdowns.

Ruthin picked up where they had left off Pre CoVid with some expansive rugby mixed in with the hard yards from the forwards. Flint spent the initial stages defending their line as Ruthin went through their phases. The first score came through the evergreen Huw Cedwyn Parry who darted through from the base of a ruck. This was converted by Morgan Sanderson.

Two more quick scores then followed from Ruthin through Bryn Sheppard and Gareth Edwards. Edwards who is now the wrong side of 50, scored what was easily the try of the day, he picked a great line to burst through the Flint defence before rounding the full back, a brilliant solo effort. Sanderson converted both to put the Blues 21-0 up. Flint hit back before the break with a well worked try to make it 21-7 at the half.

Within 5 mins of the second half Ruthin were down to 13 men following a red card and a yellow. It was backs to the wall stuff for the next 10 mins as Flint scored another 10 points to make the score 21-17.

Back to 14 men Ruthin took the 3 points from a penalty by Sanderson to make it 24-17. A lovely break from Iwan Thomas then released hooker Ollie Jackson to score under the posts, again the conversion from Sanderson was straight through the middle, 31-17.

The last 10 mins were all Ruthin and they added two more tries from prop Ryan Tank Roberts to finish 41-17. A good days work from the men in blue. Probably he most pleasing aspect was the number of ex youth team players making their senior debuts, two of those, Harri Tudor and Sam Morgan following in the footsteps of club legends John Tudor and Steve Morgan.

Next week the Blues are home again against Wrexham 2nds- Kick Off 14.30
