Rhuthun 2nds 23 Llandudno 2nds 19

In front of a large crowd on a blustery evening, Ruthin 2nds reached the semi finals of the North Wales Bowl in an absolute rip snorter of a game at Cae Ddol.

Llandudno 2nds arrived at Ruthin with a strong squad and immediately it was evident that the boys in blue were in for a real match. It was the blues who took the lead with a Deian Lloyd Williams penalty after 20 mins.

Playing with a strong wind at their backs Llandudno scored the game’s first try and conversion to lead 7-3. The game continued to be heavily defence focussed. Ruthin were running hard lines through Dewi Penrhyn and Gareth Edwards but going nowhere. Half time came with no further score but with Ruthin happy with their efforts into the wind.

The forwards came out flying for the second half let in particular by Jason Humphries and Eoin Kent who had superb games. From a trademark driving mall Tom Crawford touched down to put Ruthin back in the lead 8-7. Ruthin’s tails were up and from another driving mall Eoin Kent got a try to extend Ruthin’s lead to 13-7.

To their credit Llandudno were far from done. After some shambolic Ruthin tackling Ryan Pike scored in the corner. The conversion was nailed from out wide and Llandudno led 14-13.

Ruthin knew time was running out. After a number of strong runs by youth team flanker Carwyn Owen, Ruthin were awarded a penalty from which Deian made no mistake, 16-14 to the Blues.

Then came the moment of the match which effectively sealed the game. A strong run by Deian through a number of defenders before a sublime off load to Carwyn Owen who scored in the corner. The conversion out-wide from Deian gave Ruthin a 23-14 lead.

Llandudno scored in the dying moments to make it 23-19 but it was Ruthin who were the deserved victors and now move onto the semi finals. Dewi Wyn Williams of the competition sponsors Rybrook Land Rover Conwy awarded the man of the match award to Deian Lloyd Williams.
