Mold 2nds 7 Rhuthun 2nds 19

After week off last Saturday, Ruthin 2nds arrived at Mold this week refreshed and raring to go. It’s been over 2 years since the last ‘Battle for Moel Famau’ and with the stakes high both teams were keen to get the upper hand early on.

Ruthin gave a senior debut to winger Harri Jones whilst 3 other members of the club’s most recent youth team were also in action, once again showing the importance of the junior system. Its was however one of the older heads, captain Joe Mault, playing at 9, who was to steer his forwards round the field for 80 mins and ultimately win the blues the match.

Ruthin on the day were very forward heavy and as such the game plan always was going to be ‘up the jumper’. Hooker Dillon Edwards and Second row Eoin Kent led the way with countless carries, all gaining yards. The first try came from close range when Ryan ‘Tank’ Roberts burrowed over. The score was converted by Morgan Sanderson.

After 30 mins Ruthin doubled their lead in almost a carbon copy of the first try- Ollie Jackson worked his way up to the line before Roberts burrowed over again from short range. He’s fast becoming a try scoring machine this season. Sanderson added the extras and the blues were 14-0 up.

In the dying moments of the half Ruthin worked their way into the home 22 once again. This time much to the surprise of the forwards, the ball came out beyond 10 and centre Eti Fidow was on hand to run in the blues 3rd try. 19-0 at the half.

The second half proved to be a completely different game! Mold doing all the attacking and Ruthin doing all the defending. But Ruthin had the experienced Rob Daf and Huw Parry organising the troops and the defence was solid for the majority of the half. Mold managed one score but Ruthin were comfortable winners in the end. The Blues don’t have a scheduled game next Sat but will hope to pick up a fixture during the week.
