Rhuthun 22 Caernarfon 18

Before kick off the 120 players plus coaches and officials from the Caernarfon, Flint and Rhuthun youth, 2nds and 1st teams playing at Cae Ddol lined up for a minutes silence in memory of Mikey Jones, youth prop, who tragically died with two of his friends in a car accident last month.

In a close match, reflecting that only one point separated the Rhuthun and Caernarfon 1st teams in the league, the result was in doubt right up to the final whistle.  Caernarfon were first with points on the board with a penalty goal from Aled Jones after 5 minutes play and then missed the opportunity to further ahead with another penalty goal attempt shortly afterwards. From the restart Rhuthun went on the offensive and within the space of 10 or so minutes scored three tries, 2 from centre Nathan Jones which he converted and 1 from scrum half Cai Edwards.  The visitors responded and after a period of pressure Mark Jones went over the Rhuthun whitewash with Aled converting.  The Blues missed the opportunity to widen the gap again with a penalty goal attempt and after 40 minutes play the home side was 19-10 up.  Throughout the second half Rhuthun had to defend against well organised and effective Caernarfon attacking play.  5 minutes into the half Aled kicked another penalty goal. The score remained at 19-13 for the next 20 minutes with the Blues being denied possession and unable to effectively break out of defence for much of the time.  The visitors went down to 14 men with a yellow card giving some relief to the home side and Nathan kicked a penalty goal.  However the visitors weren’t finished and 2 minutes from full time Sion Wyn Roberts scored a try with the conversion hitting the upright.  At 22-18 the home side spent a desperate few minutes in defence until they were awarded a penalty and the ball was kicked into touch and the whistle blew for full time.
