Denbigh 8 Ruthin 18

North Wales Cup holders Ruthin booked their place in this season’s Cup semi-finals with a hard-fought win at Denbigh on Thursday evening.  Initial pressure came from the Blues and led to a penalty goal attempt which went wide but a second opportunity quickly arose which fly half Bennett slotted over.  The home side responded in similar fashion first with missed goal attempt and then a successful one with fullback Dan O’Sullivan getting the honours.  Ruthin upped the pressure and after a lineout 5yds out from the Denbigh line prop Jason Humphries went over for a try.  After the restart play moved from end to end before scrumhalf Will Mitchelmore broke from the half way line jigged past a couple of players and offloaded to fullback Kyle Davies for a try which Bennet converted.  Denbigh tried to reduce the arrears and had much of the possession and territory for the remaining 10 minutes of the first half but the Blues defence held and at half time they were 15-3 ahead.  Denbigh continued where they left off in the first half with Ruthin’s defence coming under immense pressure.  The Blues went down to 14 men with a sin bin but their good organisation and robust tackling kept the home side away from the whitewash.  Eventually captain Chris Davies broke from defence and it was the Blues turn to attack for a brief period in which they were awarded a penalty which Bennett kicked over widening the gap to 15 points.  The home side again responded and this time breached the Blues defence and captain Matt Hulse went over for a try.  The Blues had the upper hand in the final 10 minutes but there was no further score and they came away with an 18-8 win.
