Caernarfon 37 Rhuthun 13

Ruthin continued to struggle to get league points away this season with a 37-13 defeat at Caernarfon on Saturday.  The Blues playing down the slope started brightly with an unconverted try from wing Mike Evans within a few minutes of the start but the Coffis soon got one back when Dylan Gwyn went over the whitewash.  The teams were pretty evenly matched - the home signed gained the lead with a penalty goal from Aled Jones only for full back Shay Owen to respond a few minutes later and after 30 minutes the score was 8-8.  Just before half time, after some Ruthin pressure in the Caernarfon half, a Ruthin pass was intercepted and Marc Jones scored the Coffis second try after a chase across half the pitch.  Aled Jones converted and the teams went in at half time with the home side ahead 15-8.  After the break the Blues seemed to lose their way and the Coffis, playing down the slope, took advantage of some poor defence and handling to run in three tries from Rhys Evans, Iolo Hughes and Gareth Pritchard, and a penalty goal in the first 20 minutes.  At 37-8 down Ruthin seemed to wake up again and after flanker Deian Lloyd Williams got their second try they spent almost all the remaining 20 minutes in the home side’s 22.  However they could not get through a solid Caernarfon defence and at full time the whistle blew with Caernarfon getting a bonus point win.
