COBRA 21 Rhuthun 25

On a damp and cold night Thursday night in Meifod the crowd were treated to a classic cup tie between Ruthin and COBRA. It was Ruthin who flew out of the blocks and hit COBRA with an early Deian Lloyd Williams penalty. Then with less than 5 minutes played skipper Kyle Davies stripped the ball from a COBRA forward and beat the opposition winger before scoring in the corner to make it 8-0. Ruthin were in full flow now and scored the try of the match with a fine flowing backs move with the evergreen Huw Cedwyn Parry hitting an unstoppable line to score under the posts. Deian converted to make it 15-0 and that was Ruthin well on their way to the  next round surely... But back came COBRA reducing the defecit to 15-13 with some very impressive forward power. Ruthin sensed they had to raise their game again and through the impressive Mike Adams and Josh Wilson they surged into the opposition 22, the ball found its way wide to Steff Morgan who showed great footwork to score in the corner. Phyl Roberts converted from out wide and it was 22-13 to Ruthin. The game continued to flow backwards and forwards and COBRA got back into the game again with a try and a penalty to leave the score at 22-21 going into the last 15 mins. Ollie Powell-Jones then gained Ruthin a penalty right in front of the posts with some great work at the breakdown, Phyl slotted to give Ruthin a 25-21 advantage. For the final 10 minutes COBRA battered Ruthin's line and while the score look inevitable, Ruthin held out with some top class defense. A great win on the road for the boys in blue
