Rhuthun 1sts entertained Caernarfon 1sts at Cae Ddol on Saturday and came away with a bonus point win after a hard fought encounter. The Blues had points on the board after 7 minutes when wing Bryn Sheppard ran over the whitewash after a Rhuthun lineout in the Cofi’s 22. The visitors went further behind after 20 minutes play when a good break by centre Mike Jones led to wing Gwion Richards grabbing a try which he converted. Caernarfon responded and after spending some time trying to break down the home defence reduced the arrears with a try. Rhuthun bounced right back within 5 minutes with a pushover try from the pack from a line out 5yds out from the Caernarfon try line with 2nd row Chris Davies claiming the honours. The whistle blew for half time with Rhuthun ahead 17-5. After the break the Blues returned to the visitors’ 22 and within a few minutes Davies was over the line again with a try. At 22-5 ahead it looked as though the home side might coast to the end of the game but Caernarfon had other ideas and after a penalty kick led to a lineout on Rhuthun’s 22 they went over for their 2nd try. Again Rhuthun came back and restored the gap with a try by full back Iestyn Davies. Despite further Blues pressure it was Caernarfon who were back on the score board with their third try. At 27-15 a possible 2 league points was available to the visitors if they scored a further try but with 3 minutes to go Blues captain Emyr Gwynedd extinguished that hope with a fine dash over the try line and the game ended with no further score and 32-15 to Rhuthun. Caernarfon try scorers were Ilan Davies and Ieuan Owen (2)
