Machynlleth 1sts 0 Rhuthun 2nds 9

Ruthin 2nds maintained their 100 per cent league record with a fantastic team performance at Machynlleth. It was evident from the warm up that Pedr Jones men were fully focused on the job at hand.

The game was a physical arm wrestle from the off and didn’t let up for the full 80 mins. Fortunately for Ruthin they had just the man for the occasion John ‘Mawr’ Jones! Time after time the Machynlleth forwards ran into the man mountain only to be stopped dead in their tracks and the ball removed from their possession. Jones had an inspired game.

To be fair the whole Ruthin pack were getting stuck in and winning the big collisions. After a couple of fruitless visits into the Mach 22, Ruthin Captain Huw Parry opted to start going for the 3 point options. Two well struck Deian Lloyd Williams penalties saw Ruthin hold a slender 6-0 lead at half time.

The view at half time was that the game could still go either way and Ruthin couldn’t let up the intensity. The introduction of Jason Humphries brought further firepower into the forwards. From another powerful scrum Williams slotted his third penalty of the day to make it 9-0. Ruthin continued to edge the encounter and further strong Eoin Kent runs took the blues up to 5 metres out. However with a score looking inevitable, Deian Lloyd Williams had brain freeze and attempted a drop kick that went straight into the opponent’s hands. Mach rallied for the final 15 mins but couldn’t breach the Ruthin defence led by outside half Steff Parry who put his body on the line all afternoon.

The final whistle blew with Ruthin deserved winners and only the boot of Deian Lloyd Williams proving the difference between the two sides. Man of the match was Steff Parry who had a superb game both in defence and attack.
