Ruthin 19 Dinbych 15

Ruthin 2nd team retained the Clwyd Cup for the seventh year in succession in a hard fought encounter against Dinbych 2nds at Colwyn Bay on Saturday.  The Blues started well and after winning a penalty on Denbigh’s 10 yard line drove over for a try by 2nd row Pete Harrison which fly half Adam Robson converted. After a period of Ruthin pressure it was Denbigh’s turn to test Ruthin’s defence which held up well to some strong running.  After winning a penalty in Ruthin’s 22 Denbigh successfully kicked for goal.  At 7-3 both sides were trying to gain ascendancy.  Both missed penalty goal kicks and just before half time Ruthin broke from a scrum in their own half and after winning a number of penalties in Denbigh’s half wing Bryn Bolton went over the whitewash for a fine try with Robson again converting.  The second half was a scrappy affair with numerous stoppages for infringements.  Neither side were able to put a significant period of play together but Denbigh slowly reduced the arrears with penalty goals.  With 15 minutes to go they had kicked 3 more goals and the score was 14-12 to Ruthin.  The Blues responded and after a period of pressure flanker Daf Hughes forced his way over the line.  Denbigh almost immediately reduced the arrears again with another penalty goal.  With the score 19-15 to Ruthin neither side were able to put any further points on the board and the whistle blew with Ruthin still the only team to have won the Clwyd Cup since the tournament started.
